New in 2026: Quebec is tightening registration. Two proofs of principal residence are required at registration and renewal, and the owner's or condo syndicate's consent will have to be renewed every year (measures announced March 25, 2026, in force April 9 and September 1, 2026).

Principal residence

Allowed with the CITQ registration number, a zoning conformity attestation and, under bylaw 673-2024, an annual municipal permit of about $220 and $2M liability insurance.

Secondary residence or chalet

Treated as a tourist residence: allowed only where zoning permits it, with a conformity attestation, permit, registration and liability insurance. Check the lot's zoning before buying.

In every case: CITQ registration number required and 3.5% lodging tax applies.
