New in 2026: Quebec is tightening registration. Two proofs of principal residence are required at registration and renewal, and the owner's or condo syndicate's consent will have to be renewed every year (measures announced March 25, 2026, in force April 9 and September 1, 2026).

Principal residence

Zone-regulated (bylaw 11-2022) with a distance requirement of more than 150 m from a lake (bylaw 10-2020).

Secondary residence or chalet

Allowed in zones HA-5-1, HR-4, HF-1, HF-2-1, CF-1-1 and HF-2, more than 150 m from a lake. Zones to confirm in the bylaw.

In every case: CITQ registration number required and 3.5% lodging tax applies.
