New in 2026: Quebec is tightening registration. Two proofs of principal residence are required at registration and renewal, and the owner's or condo syndicate's consent will have to be renewed every year (measures announced March 25, 2026, in force April 9 and September 1, 2026).

Principal residence

Allowed on most of the territory except recreational-tourism (RT) and urban (U) zones, with a municipal certificate.

Secondary residence or chalet

Allowed except in RT and U zones, with conditions: lot of at least 4,000 m2, building 25 m or more from another, detached homes only, municipal certificate. To confirm in the bylaw.

In every case: CITQ registration number required and 3.5% lodging tax applies.
