New in 2026: Quebec is tightening registration. Two proofs of principal residence are required at registration and renewal, and the owner's or condo syndicate's consent will have to be renewed every year (measures announced March 25, 2026, in force April 9 and September 1, 2026).

Principal residence

Prohibited except in a few specific tourist zones: bylaws adopted in 2024 after the register process.

Secondary residence or chalet

Tourist residence allowed only where zoning permits it. Verify the exact zone with the municipality before buying.

In every case: CITQ registration number required and 3.5% lodging tax applies.
