New in 2026: Quebec is tightening registration. Two proofs of principal residence are required at registration and renewal, and the owner's or condo syndicate's consent will have to be renewed every year (measures announced March 25, 2026, in force April 9 and September 1, 2026).

Principal residence

Prohibited on almost the entire territory since 2023, except in four zones (MIX-1, RV-7, RV-8 and RV-36). Confirm the exact zone with the municipality before any project.

Secondary residence or chalet

Very limited: only certain zones allow the tourist residence use. Consult the municipality's short-term accommodation guide and the planning department.

In every case: CITQ registration number required and 3.5% lodging tax applies.
