New in 2026: Quebec is tightening registration. Two proofs of principal residence are required at registration and renewal, and the owner's or condo syndicate's consent will have to be renewed every year (measures announced March 25, 2026, in force April 9 and September 1, 2026).

Principal residence

Heavily restricted: following the 2023 review, short-term rental (tourist chalet or principal residence) is prohibited in the vast majority of urban-sector zones and remains only in a few sectors (part of Jardin des sables, along chemin du Parc toward the ski hill and the national park). Renewable occupancy certificate required.

Secondary residence or chalet

Allowed in the zones identified in zoning bylaw 951, mostly in the southern part of the territory; the map of authorized zones is published by the municipality. Fines of $1,000 to $1,500 per day for violations.

In every case: CITQ registration number required and 3.5% lodging tax applies.
