New in 2026: Quebec is tightening registration. Two proofs of principal residence are required at registration and renewal, and the owner's or condo syndicate's consent will have to be renewed every year (measures announced March 25, 2026, in force April 9 and September 1, 2026).

Principal residence

Allowed in only 11 zones (F17, H11, H12, H13, H14, H27, H28, H29, H31, H36 and H37) under bylaw 712; prohibited in the other zones. The Massif sector has many separate tourist-residence zones.

Secondary residence or chalet

Strong tourist-residence tradition (over 200 on the territory), but regulated: use allowed by zone, with distance rules from residential dwellings. Verify the exact zone, especially outside the Massif sector.

In every case: CITQ registration number required and 3.5% lodging tax applies.
