New in 2026: Quebec is tightening registration. Two proofs of principal residence are required at registration and renewal, and the owner's or condo syndicate's consent will have to be renewed every year (measures announced March 25, 2026, in force April 9 and September 1, 2026).

Principal residence

Prohibited: 83 bylaws adopted in March 2023 banning short-term rental of principal residences zone by zone.

Secondary residence or chalet

Allowed only in zones where the tourist accommodation use is authorized under zoning bylaw 2001-291 (secondary-dwelling framework detailed in 2024). Check the zone with the municipality.

In every case: CITQ registration number required and 3.5% lodging tax applies.
