New in 2026: Quebec is tightening registration. Two proofs of principal residence are required at registration and renewal, and the owner's or condo syndicate's consent will have to be renewed every year (measures announced March 25, 2026, in force April 9 and September 1, 2026).

Principal residence

Strictly regulated by zoning bylaw 15-924 and the conditional-use bylaw: the light lodging use (C405) is allowed only in zones UR-P4, UR-P9, UR-H6, UR-H13, UR-H14, UR-H15, UR-C10 and RT-17, with an occupancy certificate (about $50). Lake and river shorelines are excluded.

Secondary residence or chalet

Same zones and conditional-use framework; outside the listed zones, short-term rental is not authorized. Verify the chalet's exact zone before buying.

In every case: CITQ registration number required and 3.5% lodging tax applies.
