New in 2026: Quebec is tightening registration. Two proofs of principal residence are required at registration and renewal, and the owner's or condo syndicate's consent will have to be renewed every year (measures announced March 25, 2026, in force April 9 and September 1, 2026).

Principal residence

Restricted since a bylaw adopted in early 2023: short-term rental is allowed only in certain tourist sectors and prohibited elsewhere, including for principal residences.

Secondary residence or chalet

Allowed only in the tourist sectors designated by zoning. Verify the zone with the municipality before buying, especially near Mont-Sainte-Anne.

In every case: CITQ registration number required and 3.5% lodging tax applies.
