New in 2026: Quebec is tightening registration. Two proofs of principal residence are required at registration and renewal, and the owner's or condo syndicate's consent will have to be renewed every year (measures announced March 25, 2026, in force April 9 and September 1, 2026).

Principal residence

Regulated zone by zone: the City ran a register process to restrict short-term rental of principal residences to limited sectors. Validate your address with the city clerk before any project.

Secondary residence or chalet

Allowed only in a short list of zones (notably Ct, Hc, Ht and Vc zones in the zoning bylaw). Prohibited outside them. Zone check required before buying.

In every case: CITQ registration number required and 3.5% lodging tax applies.
